Your obedient Servant,

Luvant. sgol Frederick Stewart

Acting Colonial Secretary,

Colonial Surgeon.

9047

Government Civil Hospital Hong Kong

2nd August 1880

In reply to your letter of 31st July enquiring whether His Excellency is to understand that the personal questions between myself and Dr Wherry which I had raised had been dropped and the charges I had laid against him were definitely withdrawn,

I have the honour to reply that in future Dr Wherry is prepared to conform to the necessary regulations of the Hospital which I have embodied in the rules, and which I have ventured to transmit to you for the approval of His Excellency.

As regards your letter of 31st July, there will not in the future be any personal questions between Dr Wherry and myself, as the personal questions are dropped. I therefore intend to proceed no further with the charges I laid against Dr Wherry, as I understand from your letter of the 29th ultimo that His Excellency regards them as being too vague to form the basis of a definite decision by him. It is not my intention to proceed further with them unless Dr Wherry gives cause for complaint, but as they are in all respects true I cannot withdraw them.

I have the honour to be,

Your obedient Servant,

John B C Kun

Colonial Surgeon,

Acting Colonial Secretary's Office,

Hong Kong

4th August 1880

I have the honour by desire of the Governor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No 47 of the 2nd instant and in reply I am to state with reference to the last paragraph therein, that His Excellency does not think it would be quite fair to allow such charges as you laid officially against Dr Wherry to remain over his head and at the same time be withdrawn.

I am to remind you that you have produced no evidence except your own statements in support of those charges.

You now decline His Excellency's suggestion that you should withdraw them. You must produce the evidence on which you took the responsibility of making such charges.

I have the honour to be,
